Tying Instructions

Tying Instructions: Callibaetis CDC Cripple

1. Attach the thread at the 3/4 position and lay a foundation to the bend of the hook. Tie in 4-8 Woodduck Flank Fibers. The length is the same as the hook shank. Wrap the butt ends back to the 3/4 position.

2. Wrap the thread back to the tail tie-in position. Attach some sparse amounts of Olive Z-lon. The length should be about half of the Woodduck fibers. By applying only 1 or 2 wraps, you can pull on the tag ends to adjust length. Secure with some tight wraps and wrap the tag ends back to the 3/4 position.

3. Dub the Gray Hare’s Ear to the thread by twisting the material around the thread. Lock a few fibers to the shank with one wrap and twist the material for a tighter dubbing.

4. Wrap the dubbing forward with a tapered abdomen to the 3/4 position.

5. Add a couple of wraps of the Tan Rabbit dubbing prior to attaching the CDC feather. .

6. Put 2 CDC feathers together with their tips even. Attach the feathers to the top of the shank in front of the abdomen. Adjust the CDC feather so that it does not exceed the base of the tail. The adjustment is by pulling the CDC stem that hangs over the eye until the proper length is achieved. Secure with some thread wraps.

7. Add some sparse Brown Z-lon to each side of the CDC wing.

8. Apply some addtional tan rabbit dubbing to the thread.

9. Wrap the Tan dubbing for a thorax. Secure with thread wraps behind the eye which also forms a head to the fly. Whip Finish.

CDC Cripple Dun

Rene Harrop designed the CDC Cripple Dun utilizing the CDC feather for the wing. The high degree of floatation allows this pattern to float within the film despite being small. The tail consists of Lemon Woodduck Flank Fibers. Over these fibers is a sparse amount of Z-lon which represents the shuck and is about half the length of the tail. The White CDC feather gives good visibility to the fly, although Dun colors might be a better match to the actual insect. Rene uses specific colored Z-lon on each side of the CDC feather to represent legs or appendages. Cripples represent mayflies that are just emerging or got stuck in it’s shuck. The CDC Cripple Dun meets these stages of the life cycle. As the season progresses go to smaller and darker pattern colors.
