Schroeder’s Parachute Caddis

This is a pattern designed by Ed Schroeder of Fresno, CA in the early 1970’s. Ed’s home waters are the Kings River of the Sierra Nevada. Ed applied a calf hair wingpost to many patterns including hoppers, ants, hare’s ear nymphs, and caddis patterns.

Calf Hair Wingpost

These patterns were picked up by Umpqua Feather Merchants and have been marketed throughout the Sierra Nevada region as well as most of the United States. The white Calf Hair parachute makes this hopper very visible so that you can follow the drift. He suggests keeping the wing post no more than one shank length so that the caddis is more streamlined for the windy conditions which you often encounter proceeding the use of the fly.

Parachute

The parachute also makes the fly a useful indicator with a nymph dropped below it. The Schroeder’s Parachute Caddis is a great classic caddis dry fly, simple, but very effective. The pattern has a very buggy silhouette and does a great job imitating a small caddis fly. The Parachute Caddis is best tied in tan, but can be tied in Olive, Black, Brown or even Purple!
