Hogan’s Yuba Pupa

This pattern is designed by fly fishing guide Hogan Brown of Chico, CA . Hogan is a signature fly tier for Rio Products and has designed a number of flies that are marketed throughout Sierran Flyshops. Since Hogan guides on the Yuba and Feather Rivers, many of his patterns have been tested within these waters.

One of his early patterns

The Yuba Pupa is one of Hogan’s earliest patterns, inspired by one of Jim Pettis patterns, the Pulsating Caddis, with the use of Antron as a shroud material. It is designed to swing as an emerger, drift as a pupa under an indicator, or dropped off a caddis dry as a dry dropper rig. It can also be used any time of the year that fish are looking for caddis pupae leading up to, during or after a caddis hatch.

Pattern Materials

The pattern was usually tied on a TMC 2488 but Hogan has preferred the Firehole 316 primarily for the straight eye and longer shank length. The straight eye is advantageous for swinging the fly. The body is composed of a Tan Mottled Nymph dubbing with a pearlescent flashback. The shroud is 4-5 layers of Mottled Nymph dubbing fibers proceeding from a lighter coloration to a darker coloration as you near the thorax.

The thorax is represented by the Dark Olive Mottled Nymph dubbing but is actually just another layer of the shroud layering. The wingbuds are represented by goose biots with a krystalflash underwing. The goose biots should always have a darker color than the body to stand out. Finally, the pattern has a peacock herl collar of just one strand with 1-2 wraps.
