Whiting American Rooster Capes have long, wide, and webby feathers with strong stems. They are perfect for tying bass bugs, tarpon flies, deceivers, and saltwater streamers.  The Cape are the hackles around the neck and reach the back of the bird. These feathers are also referred to as a “Neck”.  Rooster capes tend to be shinier and longer than Hen capes. The tips of the hackles are also more narrow with stiffer barbs.

Capes have an advantage over Saddles in that there is a much larger variation of sizes available. Three quarters of the feathers on these Whiting American Rooster Capes measure 3″ and longer. Marc Fryt wrote a good article on the Chicken feathers that are used in fly tying.  Here is an article on Genetic Hackles developed within the United States for the fly tying industry. The American line, developed in 1992 by Dr. Whiting, was specifically for wet flies and they have also found wide appeal for large streamers and saltwater flies. With the Whiting American Capes, you also have a good source of dry fly material within the upper section of the cape.
